In 2013, The Haines Family Foundationmade a gift of
$100,000 to Virtua Foundation to provide childbirth
education programs for women in need who receive care at
The Virtua Center forWomen in Lumberton.
The gift will fund essential education and
support services for many of the center’s
underserved patients who struggle to
maintain healthy pregnancies and to care
for their newbabies.
“It’s sometimes difficult for women with limited funds to
make good choices about their health,” said Johnitta Prince,
nurse manager, The Virtua Center ForWomen, Lumberton.
“The services we provide are very valuable. The education
they receive here can be life sustaining for themselves and
their unborn child.”
The Virtua Centers forWomen in Lumberton and Voorhees
provide patients with routine gynecological services, high-risk
prenatal andmaternity care, and access to social workers,
nutritionists and financial counselors.
While the center in Lumberton provides a wide range of high-
quality obstetric and gynecological services to all women,
many patients here have significant financial needs, are
underinsured or have no insurance at all.
The Haines Family Foundation gift will help increase the
number of free and low-cost child birth classes held in
Lumberton, a move Prince said will allowmore women to
take advantage of the services, giving them greater access to
health and wellness education.
Classes in labor basics, baby basics and breastfeeding increase
the likelihood of a healthy pregnancy and the delivery of a
healthy baby.
“This gift will have a major impact by giving women access to
services they might not have otherwise,” said Prince. “If they
know someone is here to answer their questions, they will come
back. What the women learn here can empower them tomake
healthier choices that are good for them and their babies.”
